Having recently updated their web site with more aggressive hosting plans and prices, Host Excellence has really started putting the heat on the competition. Their generous selection of hosting plans, coupled with superb service and network reliability, have resulted in fast loading web sites and high customer retention.

Price 4/5
Reliability 5/5
Customer Service 5/5
Technical Support 5/5
Features 5/5
Storage Space 4/5
Bandwidth 5/5
Tech Response Time 5/5
Easy-of-Use 4/5
TOTAL : 96.2%

Reliability
Host Excellence has an impressive track record when it comes to the stability and dependability of their services. Acknowledging that reliability is in the interests of everyone involved, they have gone to great lengths to ensure that problems are few and far between. Their private data center is a testament to this principle. Backup power facilities, fault-tolerant systems and 24/7 on-site administrative staff make Host Excellence a good choice for anyone.
Price Value
If you’re looking for a great deal on web hosting services, look no further. Being a customer-oriented business, Host Excellence puts a lot of effort into offering their customers as much bang for the buck as you can get in shared hosting, providing a great selection of services and payment options, not to mention a noteworthy level of customer support, the value of which is something that cannot be easily expressed. They provide you with the tools needed to build your website, setup an ecommerce store, manage your databases and a great deal more, all at a wonderful price.
Control Panel
Host Excellence has developed a unique control panel for their customers. Frankly, I would say that their control panel software is one of the best on the market, IF it were on the market. They employ a highly modified and expanded version of HSphere (www.hsphere.com) as their hosting control panel, provided for both Linux and Windows based accounts. Throughout our testing, their control panel has been very snappy and reliable. It is much more user-friendly than most of the control panels out there and easy to operate. Included is an extensive customer guide which can quickly assist even the most reluctant novice.
Customer Support
The support they provide can easily be rated as excellent, especially their phone support. Host Excellence makes sure that their customers are never left on their own if problems arise, offering 24/7 phone support, LiveChat, and helpdesk support avenues, all free, and all staffed by skilled and friendly people who resolve issues quickly and are easy to work with. We commend them for their prompt and reliable support!
Summary
Host Excellence is clearly a premier player in the shared hosting market. While our experiences with them were not perfect enough to garner the #1 spot on our chart, they are definitely a good choice, and we don’t hesitate in recommending them.

IX Web Hosting

IX Web Hosting has made a remarkable name for itself since its inception in 1999. Boasting their own data center, a highly professional website and very attractive hosting plans, they have managed to be added to the short list of companies that Best Host Reviews is reviewing. Over the course of our review of IX Web Hosting, a period of many months, they continuously improved their performance, reliability and customer service, resulting in extremely quick loading websites and high customer satisfaction. All of this has contributed to their #1 rating by our review team.

Vyatta Community Expands with VC3

November 30, 2007 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The recent release of version 3 of its Community Edition, open source routing solutions company Vyatta (vyatta.com) brought new features to the free version of the products with which it is working to take on networking giants like Cisco and Juniper.
The "community edition" of the Vyatta networking platform, known as VC3, is the freely available version of the company's open source networking platform, which includes routing, firewall and VPN functions. Patches for the community edition are released every six months, while customers of the paid-for subscription versions of the product (a professional edition starting at $647 and enterprise edition at $897) have access to support via means escalating according to price.

The version 3 update brings the community edition up to speed features-wise with the subscription versions, adding, according to the official announcement, an IPSec VPN, multi-link PPP and BGP scaling and security enhancements.

According to Dave Roberts, vice president of marketing and strategy, that community is a large part of Vyatta's appeal. The product has been downloaded more than 100,000 times since its launch, and the company operates alongside an active community of users. That milestone, and the new software version, are helping to bring attention to a product Roberts feels has the potential to take on major proprietary products from Cisco and Juniper in the networking space.

The real selling point for the Vyatta platform, however, is price. Designed to operate within the x86 ecosystem, the vyatta platform can be deployed on standard-issue computing hardware. Roberts says this obviously makes an enormous price difference in comparison to proprietary hardware.

The example he uses is a fast Ethernet port for a midrange router. Cisco charges a list price of about $1,400. You can find one for about $1,000. A fast Ethernet port in the x86 environment is about $20.

"It's the easiest elevator pitch I've ever had," says Roberts.

The product itself is a platform for combining some existing open-source networking tools, for instance the openSWAN VPN, and providing a consistent management interface and documentation, with support.

"We are more like the Red Hat model," says Roberts, "than the MySQL model; we are pulling together components from other places, but we're also doing a lot of our own work to integrate those components. It's our belief that to penetrate the typical networking market, we need to present a user interface and a layer of integration that's much more consistent with what people would expect from a proprietary cisco or juniper. A lot of the value-add that vyatta has done - and we do write a lot of code - is in pulling those things together and really providing that nice integration."

In addition to the software package, Vyatta distributes the platform pre-installed on Dell hardware for customers who don't want to handle the setup themselves.

For service providers, much of the appeal in the Vyatta platform lies in the product's potential to be virtualized.

"A lot of our value proposition for the hosting market," says Roberts, "was being able to provision a virtual machine inside a single physical hardware system that was allocated or dedicated to a particular customer. So in the same way that we have a VPS market in the hosting world, the idea is you have a kind of virtual private firewall or virtual private router. And Vyatta plus Zen or VMware really makes that possible on standard hardware, which is really exciting."

Finally, he says, Vyatta relies on its potential to be whatever customers want.

"Because we are running on Linux," he says, "it gives people the ability to customize or add stuff. You've got a developer base that understands how to develop for Linux, so you can actually add something custom to the box - maybe it's management, maybe it's monitoring. That's something you can't do with Juniper or Cisco. You get the features and functions that they want you to have and that's it."

The Web Host Industry Week in Review

December 7, 2007 -- (WEB HOST IDNUSTRY REVIEW) -- It's not quite that this week's Web hosting news was bereft of real stories. There were quite a few important announcements, in fact. But it is certainly a sign of the times that this week's news was dominated, volume-wise, by hosting providers announcing their holiday specials.
Probably more significantly, however, this week also saw UK Web hosting provider Fasthosts offering some explanation for last week's decision to change login passwords for some of its customers. The decision, a reaction to a previously reported security breach, had some customers puzzled and some upset. In its announcement, the company stood by the decision, saying it had to take care of the problem. Fasthosts also said it intends to reset the email passwords next week of customers who haven't done so.

But the great common thread in this week's was certainly the revealing of holiday offerings, with quite a few Web hosts seeming determined to position their products as possible gifts.

On Monday, Netfirms announced it is offering a holiday promotion for new customers. Through December 27, new customers that sign up for its Business Plan will receive $60 off a yearly subscription. The plan includes 300GB disk space and 3,000GB of bandwidth, 1,000 email accounts, five domain names and the ability to host unlimited websites on one account.

On Wednesday, hosting provider SuperbHosting announced it, too, had launched a holiday promotion. Customers who sign up for a hosting package between December 1 and 21 will be eligible to win a Nintendo Wii game system, which the company says was the must-have gift for 2006 and one of the most sought after gadgets in 2007.

In its own effort to create a holiday offering, SiteGround announced that it would again distribute gift certificates to customers, a promotion the company says was quite successful last year. Each gift certificate is worth a $20 discount on the company's hosting services. While some customers are giving the certificates to friends, says the company, others are giving them away on their Web sites.

On Thursday, HostMySite announced that it would offer a similar holiday promotion, giving customers who purchase an annual hosting plan a gift card from a popular online retailer, ranging in value from $10 to $25, depending on the plan. The company says it also extended its ?Double Your Processing Power? promotion from November.

And on Thursday again, FastNext announced that it is running a holiday promotion for new and existing customers until January 7. The company is giving away six months of free hosting to any customer who signs up for a shared hosting plan and one month free hosting for anyone who signs up for its reseller package. The company is providing existing customers and resellers with new software.

While it's never been 100 percent clear that there exists a strong base of people who consider Web hosting an excellent Christmas gift, it's certainly an acceptable excuse for many hosting companies to run promotions. And the volume of companies that do so would seem to suggest that it's at least somewhat successful.

ANHosting discount for Thanksgiving

Here's another crazy discount offer direct from ANHosting:

"Coming off the heels of one of our most successful promotions ever we're excited to announce that we've GONE PLUMB OUT OF OUR MINDS this November and have thrown the rules OUT THE WINDOW!

We're proudly introducing the AN Hosting "One Size Fits All" hosting plan!

Continue reading "ANHosting discount for Thanksgiving" »

Web Hosting Coupons

Try Hostgator for just one penny! All of this has contributed to their #1 rating by our review team
ReliabilityDuring our extensive hosting experience with IX Web Hosting, we have had hardly any server outages. It would be a lie to say none of our test accounts have never been down - however, the uptime track record is impressive. The question is not IF downtime happens, the question is how often it happens and how quickly your hosting company can resolve the problem, and prevent it in the future. Our overall reliability experience with IX Web Hosting is positive. IX Web Hosting employs diesel backup generators, tested weekly, to ensure that no downtime is encountered over power issues. They also perform routine upgrades to their infrastructure, and do so in as unobtrusive a way as possible, which is a plus.Price ValueIX Web Hosting, as with all of the hosts we review, are in the shared hosting market, one in which competition is fierce, and prices can only go so low. As a consequence, you tend to get a great deal for your money and IX Web Hosting is definitely competitive in this respect. They offer free site builder software, a free shopping cart, a wonderful customer control panel, and of course, great prices. Their billing cycles run from quarterly and semi-annual to 1 and 2-year billing cycles, on all plans. The longer the billing cycle, the higher the discount that is offered. On top of this, customer support well-covered: 24/7 phone support, a LiveChat interface and a snappy ticketing system make problem resolution painlessControl PanelThe basis of their control panel is H-Sphere. However, IX Web Hosting's programming staff has modified it heavily. Both LINUX and WINDOWS hosting accounts are provided with this control panel, which functions flawlessly with accounts on both platforms. It allows you to add, remove and manage your domain names, subdomains, FTP accounts, email accounts, mailing lists, auto responders, email aliases, MIME Types, Apache Indexes, PHP / ASP configuration, mySQL, PostgreSQL and MSSQL databases, SQL database users, as well as cancelling and resuming your account subscription and reporting problems through trouble tickets, all from one interface.Customer SupportA cornerstone of IX Web Hosting's success has always been well-covered customer support. Their support staff has grown dramaticly over the years and continues to expand to try meeting the needs of their customers. They offer toll free phone support, web-based live chat, email support and a convenient ticketing system, all staffed 24 hours a day. Summary Conclusion: One of the best hosting companies we have ever reviewed. If IX Web Hosting keeps up the good work, we will consider moving our website to their servers.

Hosting Package

$700 CoffeeCup Design Software FREE 1 FREE Domain Name for Life 350 Gigs Storage 3500 Gigs Data Transfer 24/7 Award Winning Support! In most cases you will need to already own and have the top-level domain name registered (or buy domain registration from them), but there are a few websites where you can get free domain names if you don't already have one." The alternatives to using a free domain host would be to use free subdomain hosting (using a subdirectory or a subdomain of the free web host), or buy cheap domain hosting (aka "budget domain name hosting"). While a free domain web hosting server may not be considered reliable enough to host a high-traffic website, having free domain name web hosting service (and especially having multiple domain web hosting free) is quite useful for beginning webmasters or SEO on a budget (it is recommended to have each of your web sites hosted on a separate IP address, which usually means using a different web hosting company for each domainname hosted free).

Free Web Hosting Service Registeration - 3 Easy steps to your new WebSite.

FREE WEB HOSTING2 SIMPLE STEPS TO GET HOSTED AT THE BEST FREE WEB HOSTING SITE -> Trap17( these steps are for those people who are extremely impatient and want to get started without reading the instruction manual )[+] Register at our forums and take active part in it by making *Good* Posts. Part 1What is it? How it works. Dedicated web hosting is basically renting a whole server solely for your use (dedicated). It is much like having your own server but the biggest difference is you do not need a large initial investment to set it up. Dedicated web hosting comes in two forms. Managed and unmanaged. Commonly, unmanaged hosting plans include hardware, operating system, web server and Internet connection. Managed plans however include the basics and pretty much everything else that the only thing you need to worry about is your web site and content. Knowing this, you should carefully review your organization’s setup to see if you have the financial & physical resources to manage your servers. For most organizations, the higher monthly cost of a managed plan works out to be more cost effective overall. There would be occasion an unmanaged plan works best. In these scenarios the organizations already have a good support department but would rather not have hardware and certain software maintenance concerns. Without needing to share space & resources you gain many benefits. Your web page will run better and faster because resources are used to serve only your web site and you can optimize the server and database for your web site. Another benefit of server customization is you get to install and run the programs that your web site needs, not re-programming your web site to fit the server. You also have full access to storage, which is certainly a perk for a growing web site. Managed dedicated hosting customers also generally enjoy a better level of service. Many web hosts assign a personal representative who also supports a handful of other accounts. Managed plan customers get the freedom to build the web site the way they want it without having hardware, operating system, certain software, middleware, security, Internet connection, backup, power backup, staff, casualties & loss prevention even insurance responsibilities. Part 2 Hardware & ConnectionAs with choosing the operating system or software, hardware requirements depend a lot on your web site’s current and future needs. We’ll give you some good basics to look for.
Processor TypeIntel is recommended for large web sites because it’s emits less heat. You should choose Celeron for small web sites and Pentium 4 for medium web sites. Dual Xeons are highly recommended for high traffic web sites to give you the processing power; more so if your web site uses a lot of server side scripting. On the average, processor speeds of 2 to 2.4 GHz are good choices.
MemoryYour server should have at least 512MB of memory for serving up your pages in a reasonable time. If your web site makes heavy use of server side programming languages (PHP, CGI, ASP) we highly recommend a 1024 MB minimum and high traffic web sites should have 2048 MB and thereabouts.
Hard DriveBetween IDE and SCSI hard drives, most would like to have a SCSI drive. They are very robust, and use little if no processor power making them very fast; an ideal situation for anyone but the cost is prohibitive. If budgets permit, an 18 GB SCSI hard drive is very sufficient for most. If you choose IDE, choose a 7200-RPM drive with about 40GB of storage. You might wonder why you need so much since your shared hosting plan only has a fraction of that and you still have left over space. Do not forget, with a dedicated server, you need space for software to run your web site. In a shared environment that software space is owned by the web host and not added towards your hosting plan. Part 3Estimating BandwidthWeb hosts calculate your usage using one of these three methods. Per use, capped, or 95% use. Each one is quite different so be sure you understand your requirements versus the method used in the plan. You’ll need to first understand the basics. Data transfer is measured in bits or bytes. Here’s a simple equivalents chart: 8 bits (b) = 1 byte (B)1024 byte = 1 kilobyte (kb)1024 kilobytes = 1 Megabyte (MB)1024 Megabyte = 1 Gigabyte (GB)Data transfer is the measure of bits or bytes traveling over time. So, if you are told 1 Mbps it means 1 Megabyte is being transferred in one second. If your hosting plan has 600 GB per month you can transfer as much as 600 GB of data in one month. To calculate usage, your host relies on usage reports such as Multi Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG). The report shows your web site’s average incoming and outgoing traffic. The following formula is then applied: ( Monthly Average incoming + Monthly average outgoing data ) /8 x 60sec x 60min x 24 hrs x 30.5 days = Total month’s bandwidth Per Use Method In this method, a web host calculates your usage in a month and bill you the price per Gigabyte, Megabyte or Kilobytes. Some web hosts charge in blocks of 10 or 100. Capped Method Using this method, your web host will allocate a certain amount of transfer a month. If you exceed it, your web site will either be inaccessible or is considerably delayed. While this sounds like a bad option, most use this method because it’s a fixed cost. You should get the plan with a little more transfer than you expect to use. 95% Method In this method, your web host looks at your total bandwidth usage for the month. The top 5% of use is discarded. The remaining 95% of will be used to calculate your usage. If you have occasional usage spikes, this might be a good method for you because the peaks will not be calculated. Knowing this, you need to go back to your current web host’s control panel to find out what your average use is. Add on a certain percent for growth you expect, and then look for a plan matching those requirements. Part 4Choosing A Dedicated Web Host Having a dedicated server is expensive and not as easy to migrate as a shared server environment. So making sure the host is right is ever more important. Some of the utmost concerns you should have when choosing a dedicated web host is of course the company reliability and support. You should expect better, more responsive support than a shared web host. You shouldn’t settle for anything less than 24 x 7 telephone support preferably toll free. Find out how quickly the average response is in the event of hardware, connection or certain software failure. If they never had a failure, do they have a contingency plan in place? Check their network reliability. Verify information, as best you can; don’t take the web host’s word at face value. Take your time, ask around and talk to their customers. If purchasing a managed plan, ensure server monitoring is included and your web host stays on top of security patches. Try to stay away from long term contracts and choose a month to month option at least until you know how satisfactory the web host is going to be. You have to own a piece of space in cyberspace. Web hosting empowers you and anyone with a computer and internet connection to own a piece of cyberspace. In your space, you can have news, bulletins, documents, data, files (your web site) and your own post office (mail server) to accept mail, all in the context of you or your business. This is your space and to get this space you either have to own a piece of the physical internet with a network connection to the internet backbone and computer(s) operating as server(s) offering access to your files and post office, for people on the internet to view your web site or send and receive email with you. The cost of owning a direct connection to the backbone and a server dedicated to a web site and email is out of reach for the average business and especially general members of the internet. Even running a web site and mail server on your own computer when it is connected to the internet requires a lot of technical ability and knowledge. The internet itself has to be your business for either of these options to be viable. In our modern society, for every person in business or with a career in most industries today, it is imperative to have a place in cyberspace, not just to be competitive but to survive. Web hosting companies were born out of this great need to provide an environment for the masses to own a piece of cyberspace, to offer an environment where people could have their piece of cyberspace on the internet 24/7 without the great cost. Web hosting companies developed a model where they could split up areas on the servers connected to the backbone and ?rent? this space, cutting the costs across many people sharing the server and backbone connection to the internet. In a web-hosting environment, you are offered a web site to place your files, data, documents, and bulletins for people to access with their web browser and an email server for you to send and receive email messages. The web host will also provide you a means to get an address for people to get to your web site with a web browser and post email to you. To obtain space in a web hosting environment you become a member and agree to terms and conditions of renting the space ? just as if you were to rent a house or commercial premises for your business. Once you agree and become a member, you are given an access code, a key, to your piece of cyberspace. This key, in the form of a login and password, allows you to connect to the web hosting server and up-load (transfer to) your web site so it can be accessed on the internet. Your login and password is also used to connect to a mail server to create and administer mailboxes to send and receive email for you, your staff, or family members. Just like when you rent a house or commercial premises for your business, you have so many rooms, bathrooms, and floor space to use. In a web-hosting environment, your area is defined as disk space and network transfer. Disk space is measured in Megabytes (MB) or Gigabytes (GB). Megabyte roughly means 1,024,000 characters and Gigabyte roughly means 1,024 Million characters. Imagine a character as one key on your key board. These amounts determine how many files, documents, or data you can have on your web site. Network Transfer is also measured in Megabytes or gigabytes which determines how much data (how many of your files, documents or data) can be downloaded (transferred to) people accessing your web site. The more people, or the more data each person accesses on your web site the more data is transferred on the network. The more disk space and network transfer you use the greater percentage of the web-hosting environment you are using ? therefore the higher the rent. Just as no office building and home is the same, neither is every web-hosting environment. Some offices have stairs, others have lifts, some houses have ensuites, swimming pools, and gardens, ? and others do not. Web-hosting environments are much the same, some offer bare structures to do just the basics and others offer an array of features and facilities to help you do just about everything you could ever need or want. Some of the features and facilities likely to be offered are ranges of software to use, components, databases, and server side script processing. The similarity of renting an office or home to renting space in a web-hosting environment is even more similar. With some buildings a gardener and/or a guard is available to look after the gardening or provide security. In a web-hosting environment, you have support people to help you do what you need to do on your web site to make it grow and there are server administrators to protect and secure your web-hosting space. When you rent a building there are key parts needed to work or live in the space, like rooms, offices, kitchens, toilets, and bathrooms. In your web-hosting environment, you will find equally important components that are required to make the space workable. The core components in a web-hosting environment are: Web Server The web server is a relatively simple piece of software that accepts requests over HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and delivers HTML pages and Image files. FTP Server FTP is the means of which a web master can transfer files to and from the server. To put your HTML and image files on a server you will generally use FTP to upload (transfer to) your files to the server running the web server. Mail Server The mail server consists of two parts POP (Post Office Protocol) and SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol). POP is where email is received into your mailbox and SMTP is what is used to send and receive email between mail servers. Database Server If you are using server side scripting on your web server (you use something like Microsoft Internet Information Server) then instead of providing ?static? data only on web pages you can provide data from a database allowing your users to search and view the data in different and dynamic way. Also, a Database server is used to gather data from visitors to your site; orders, feedback, discussions and the like. Each one of the above components are software programs running on servers in the web-hosting environment. You can interact with each of these with special software programs you use on your computer. The main ones being: Web Browser When viewing the web you use a web browser like Internet Explorer. Many web hosting companies provide a ?Control Panel? to administer your web host account, which you use with your web browser. Most allow you to configure most aspects of your account using a simple web browser. Web site/page editor Today many web servers allow editing of WebPages over HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) based on Microsoft FrontPage technology. These special editors allow you to essentially look at your web site as if you were using a web browser and edit the pages directly as you see them using WYSWIG (What you see if what you get) technology. Most web hosting environments support this, and if you are starting out, make sure it is available. One tip: make sure the web host providing this really does understand this technology ? it is the main area of which many hacks and security intrusions occur. FTP Client This is a very simple piece of software that allows you to view the server folders and files in your web host account as if they were files and folders on your own computer. You can then drag and drop files between you computer and your web host account. Email Client If you are on the internet you would already be using an email client to send and receive your email. The most common are Outlook Express, Eudora and Web based mail clients like Hotmail. Database Administration Client The most common databases used with web servers are Microsoft SQL Server (available only on Windows) and MySQL (commonly found on Linux and UNIX but also available on Windows). SQL Server comes with it's own administration client where you can view your databases, edit them, backup data and do all the administration functions you need. MySQL has an active online community where there is a range of administration clients available. Choosing a web host is, again, similar to choosing a house to live in or commercial premises to do business. You need to define what it is you require: how much space you need and what features and facilities you need. If you have been reading this article because this is new to you, then it is likely at this stage you only need minimal space and basic facilities. Once you have worked with the basic facilities you will learn more and become aware of greater facilities and features and then you can simple move from one web ?hosting environment to another ? paying more or paying less. Moving in cyberspace is much easier, faster, and more seamless than physically moving house or commercial premises. Initially you may use the web-hosting environment offered by your ISP (internet Service provider), the company you use to connect to the internet. But remember these companies main business is connecting many thousands of people to the internet ? not managing web hosting environments. You will generally find they offer less than basic facilities and minimal space. If you are just starting out with your first web site the first major choice you will be faced with is ?Unix? or ?Windows?. For a person just starting out on the internet, both are equally capable and will offer the facilities you need to have your place in cyberspace. If you have a web designer or technical person to help you, you only need to consider how much space you really need. With this simple idea in mind, when you are just starting out, owning your piece of cyberspace will not cost anymore than $8 per month. Many web-hosting companies will offer what you need for as little as $3 per month (usually paid yearly). If you are going alone and doing it all yourself you may want to consider an account with a web hosting company that offers and prides itself on it's support and customer service, 24/7 support access and the experience, knowledge and skill of it's server administrators. Remember, these are the gardeners and the guards who take care of your environment. Web hosting is very simple and straightforward an once you obtain your space in cyberspace you will never want to let it go and you can easily move it where you want as a turtle carries it's shell on it's back. Always remember you are not stuck in the first web-hoisting environment you choose. Web hosting isyour space in cyberspace and it is imperative to have a place in cyberspace in our modern society, just as it is to have an office to do business.

Is your site wearing a jacket and tie?

The Internet is a virtual environment. Every single thing you see is non-tangible. Your visitors cannot actually hold your product or service in their hands. They cannot feel it, smell it, taste it or hear it. You can only work within a limited environment; the Internet. So how do you sell a product or service you offer if your visitors can only see it in this virtual environment? You simply work with what you have and make it better than your competitor's. Almost all web sites are stores or offices that have been placed online. If you have a store or office, it needs to be "translated" into a virtual environment. Unfortunately, this is where many companies or private owners make their biggest mistake. It's the actual process of transferring this location on to the Internet, to your web pages. Those who have offices may not necessarily have an advantage as they might already have a head start or something to start with. As stated earlier, the Internet is virtual meaning your limits are basically your imagination. This is where web design comes into place. Have you ever noticed how some places you walk into, all the staff are nicely dressed with jacket and tie, greeted with a smile and all their products are displayed very nicely. This is not done by coincidence. There is of course a reason for this. This is where the office has to, again, translate this service and quality to their website. The great part about this is that your web pages have limitless possibilities. You may be renting space for your office or store, but you of course have not built your own building or office space. That is left up to the engineers and building contractors. On the Internet it is much the same way. You rent space from a web host provider and decide on a look or web design template which will basically make up the interior of your store or office. Templates can range in price from nothing to no more than $80 or so. Any designs ranging in the hundreds or thousands of dollars are web designs done by individuals and who sell a design to only one customer. There is no need for any personal and complicated web designer consultations or "cost-per-hour" fees which can very easily mount to over a few hundred dollars per design when purchasing templates. You do not have to worry about unpredictable or unsatisfactory end results with other private designers as you are able to preview the design before purchasing a template. If you would prefer to be the only website to have a certain design and be willing to pay $300 minimum, then go for it. There are, however over 3 billion web pages on the Internet, so the chances of someone else having the same design you do is probably at least a few million pages away! What some people discover, is that if you have purchased a web page editor, like FrontPage, you do not necessarily know how to design a web page yourself. There are many What You See Is What You Get editors (WYSIWYG) available to make editing pages much easier, but designing a professional website can still prove to be a difficult task. Templates can easily make this process much easier and lend a helping hand. A highly recommended web page editing program is Selida, (do a search for "Selida" on Google to download this program) which is also free. Please be warned that not all free editors are capable of editing templates. Ask the company that is selling the web templates if your software can edit the templates. The following are a few pointers to think about when choosing a web design template: Consider the entrance to your virtual store, (your index.html page). Is it large enough, noticeable, professional looking, too gloomy, too serious? etc. What is the first impression you get? Is it better than your current store or office? (if you have one of course, or copy one you admire) Do you have the opportunity to make it better than your current store? Does it reflect the image you want to reveal? How is the virtual office or store inside? (your sub-pages.html and products.html) Does it look fully staffed? How can you make it fully staffed? Add pictures of people or your staff. Add a "This page last updated on..." on some of your pages so visitors know that there is activity on your site. Your visitors or customers do not want to be the only one's purchasing your products. Add a forum. Let your visitors email your support. Do you have an "about us" page so your visitors really know who you are? If you are a "one-man-show" use "us" and "we" instead of I. Please keep in mind that not all visitors or customers wish for a big company but would rather talk on a one-to-one basis. "We" or "us" is not necessarily better than "I". How is the product placement? Have you ever not been able to find a product in a store? Why? What was the reason? Have you avoided the problem on your web pages? The ordering of the service or product is just as important. When people purchase products in a store, they feel safe about where their money is going; to the cashier. Again, on the Internet, everything is virtual. Your customers do not hand out the money to you, they type in a few numbers on a web page and assume it is processed securely and safely. The professionalism and quality of your web design will help prove that somewhat. A cheap looking website will easily become a hindrance to your visitors, regardless if the service or product you sell is what they want. How is your ordering process? Is it just like in the stores in town? Is there a smile there to greet them? Is it too serious or too unprofessional looking? Does it look secure and safe? Do your visitors understand how their orders are processed, how secure their orders are and how they obtain your service or product? A useful tool is to also compare your site to your competition. You can always learn a few things about how they have designed their site. Try and find out what are some of the positive characteristics of their site design and what are some of the negative characteristics. How can you make yours better? There is a saying that if your competitor opens up shop, you place yours right next to theirs but make it better. There is more publicity for you and more visitors visiting the better of the two, whichever one that is, is up to you.

Web Hosting Services Provider Webair Acquires Wisol

Webair, a New York City-based Web host, has expanded its presence into Canada with the acquisition of Montreal-based Web hosting services provider Wisol.

The Planet Announces Dedicated Backup Server Promotion

Leading Web host The Planet has announced its Dedicated Backup Server pricing promotion. This article will focus on some key differences between different operating systems for dedicated servers and explain the difference between Windows servers and Unix / Linux varieties. Windows Dedicated ServersTo understand Unix servers in all their variety, it is necessary to understand and distinguish them from Windows dedicated servers. Windows dedicated servers are usually more expensive and less used than Linux/BSD servers. It is, however, the preferable option for a variety of software components and some additional other uses where it may be a desirable alternative. ASP, or Active Server Pages, is a web-based programming language which was developed by Microsoft. There are some software packages which claim to allow ASP to be used on Linux, but there's nothing that's very widely used or recommended. ASP runs the best (and arguably only) on Windows servers. Therefore, ASP developers and sites which wish to utilize ASP will use Windows Servers. If a site intends to utilize the ASP programming language, a Windows server would be the logical choice. FrontPage Server Extensions may also present a reason to use Windows servers. FrontPage is a website editor made by Microsoft. Certain publishing and development features in the software can only be utilized if the server the sites are designed for has FrontPage extensions available. While there is support for this under Linux, FrontPage and it's extensions were originally designed for Windows servers. There may exist certain compatibility issues with Linux servers and the FrontPage extensions. If a site needs to make use of these extensions, a Windows Server would be the preferable choice.Windows Servers support most software that runs on Linux also with a few exceptions. PHP, a popular web programming language can be installed and used on Windows servers. MySQL, one of the most popular (and free) database platforms is also available for use on Windows servers. In addition to mySQL, Microsoft also offers it's own flavor of SQL called called Microsoft SQL Server, or MsSQL for short. While most normal users may not take advantage of high end server software such as ASP or MsSQL, some businesses prefer the support and commercial aspects surrounding Microsoft products, instead of the free and "unsupported" nature of Linux/BSD variants. Larger businesses or those looking to use ASP, FrontPage, and MsSQL may find that Windows servers more closely match what their needs. Unix / Linux Dedicated ServersLinux Dedicated Servers vary somewhat from their Windows counterparts. That's because many different distributions of Linux are available, while only 1 variety of Windows Server is used.. Ubuntu, Redhat, Mandrake, and Debian are all varieties of Linux (and there are still far more). Some distributions appeal comes from the fact that they can be used on a desktop environment as an alternative to Windows, however the ones utilized for web hosting are more geared towards use as a server. The first of these is called Redhat Enterprise Linux. Redhat Linux was formally a free, open-source operating system but migrated more into the commercial side of things, instead opting for Enterprise-based services. While it is still "open source" technically, the basic subscription package runs over $300. The standard price does include web support for any problems, and more expensive packages can be purchased which include 24x7 phone support. While the costs associated with the operating system may be high, businesses who wish to use utilize a Linux-based operating system with Enterprise solutions and greater levels of support than free, open source operating systems may wish to utilize Redhat Enterprise Linux. For those that find Redhat Enterprise Linux appealing, but the price tag not so appealing, Fedora may be a better alternative. It's based off of Redhat Enterprise Linux, but does not include any sort of commercial support. While the two are not the same piece of software, Redhat engineers also work on Fedora, and some of the enhancements to Fedora go into Redhat and vice versa, making the two closely related. While Fedora works perfectly fine in a server setup, it's more designed for the desktop user in mind. Those who find the desktop environment particularly appealing may wish to use it, however, other operating systems more intended for usage as a server are available. Fedora is available free of charge for use on a dedicated server.CentOS is an operating system based on Redhat Enterprise Linux like Fedora The newest version, 5.0, and is based off of Redhat Enterprise Linux 5. It differs from Fedora as it's not designed at all to be a desktop operating system. While limited desktop functions do exist, CentOS is designed for servers. CentOS is one of the more popular choices, as it's easy to upgrade and maintain, well-supported, and designed specifically for server environments. FreeBSD is another server operating system that differs slightly from the above Linux ones. While FreeBSD itself is not Linux, it's quite comparable to Linux. Unlike Linux, all of the utilities on FreeBSD (the programs, the kernel, the shell etc.) are all part of the operating system and developed by the same set of developers, unlike Linux which tends to be a bunch of different programs thrown together in one distribution. FreeBSD also has a reputation of being stable, and for having the longest uptimes out of any other linux-based server environment. It may not be good for a desktop environment or have many "frills", but FreeBSD's impressive stability, uptime, and security enhancements make it a solid choice for a dedicated server operating system. Ultimately, the choice of which dedicated server operating system to run is up to the user or company using the server. However, an important thing to keep in mind is the software that will be installed. Similar to how only Windows will run sites based on the ASP programming language, certain widely used software may not be able to run on the operating system of choice. For example, cPanel, a popular web hosting control panel, is currently not available for Windows Servers but will run on all of the Linux/BSD operating systems mentioned above. This is an important thing to look at when choosing which server operating system may be right for individual needs.

Managed Dedicated Servers Content Provided by WestHost

Managed Dedicated Servers - What Are They, and Who Are they For? by The Hosting News Staff Within the world of web hosting there are a number of specialty hosting services. In the category of dedicated web hosting and dedicated servers there exists a sub-category of hosting products and services that have the moniker 'managed' in common. What exactly is a managed dedicated server and which customers are best suited for this product? In order to clearly understand the product category encompassed by managed dedicated servers, it is important to understand the overall category of dedicated server web hosting products. Terminology is thrown around in the web hosting industry often, and in large amounts. From shared hosting, to dedicated servers, to hardware specifications and bandwidth limits, these terms are sometimes not explained clearly or at all. One of these terms used without many descriptions of "what exactly it is" is a dedicated server. A dedicated server is a particularly viable option, but it may only work for some people, and there's still a few quirks involved. This article will discuss what a dedicated server is, who they're intended for and under what situations, and some basic explanations of what to look for in a dedicated server including unmanaged vs. managed solutions. So What is a Dedicated Server? A dedicated server is an actual, physical server in a data center somewhere. Like a normal desktop computer, it has it's own processor, memory, hard drive etc. A dedicated server is different from "shared" hosting, another hosting option used by most small sites, which derives it's name from the fact that many people share a single server. A dedicated server is different. As the name would suggest, a dedicated server is 100% dedicated – all of the resources on it are open for the sole use of the owner, absolutely nothing is shared. It's because of this fact that makes dedicated servers extremely appealing to larger websites and hosting companies. Not only do these servers have many more resources than normal shared hosting accounts, you aren't at the mercy of other's sharing your account. No longer will sites use most of the resources on a system, making other sites load slowly. For larger websites or businesses, a dedicated server can be a huge step in the right direction. Dedicated servers are intended for a particular group of people. For example, someone with a simple, personal homepage would not want to consider a dedicated server, as it's much more expensive than typical shared hosting account. It also includes far more resources than a small personal page would most likely even come close to using. For larger web sites that utilize high amounts of processing power (like bulletin boards, web games, or complicated scripts), or web sites that have very high amounts of traffic, a dedicated server is certainly an option to look into. At some point, larger web sites will simply exceed the amount of bandwidth and space that a hosting company can provide, and use more resources than a regular hosting company can provide. Dedicated servers also have myriad other uses besides high traffic and high resource web sites. Dedicated servers also are frequently used to run game, chat, or radio servers. Depending on their size, these tend to use a greater amount of resources than a typical website. Some hosts will also not permit these on a normal hosting server because of the amount of resources they use, and the impact they may have on other web hosting customers. Almost all applications that require a dedicated server share a need for copious amounts of bandwidth, high storage needs, or simply the need to isolate critical processes from other hosted accounts. A final category of people that may make use of a dedicated server are more tech minded individuals, or users with experience in system administration. On a normal hosting account, installing, upgrading, or using a particular version of software such as PHP, SQL, control panel software, or even a certain operating system is not usually possible. For full customization in operating system, software and server settings, a dedicated server may be the better option. The amount control dedicated servers offer is unparalleled. However, not everyone has to be a system administrations expert to use a dedicated server. Dedicated servers can also be used by less technical users. Managed Dedicated Servers vs. Unmanaged Dedicated Servers - What is the Difference? Managed dedicated servers vs. unmanaged servers can be a clouded issue. The bottom line: it depends on the hosting company as to what their definition of managed or unmanaged, but there are some basic guidelines on this issue.Unmanaged Hosting, while cheaper, does run the risk of breaking something without anyone to fix it, at least without paying for such services. The host will usually setup an initial operating system and some basic software, and leave the rest up to you. Hosts will usually not install or upgrade any programs or operating systems (sometimes they won't even install security upgrades!) on a server. If something needs to be reconfigured, or a setting is changed somewhere that causes problems, usually a host won't spend much time trying to fix it on unmanaged servers. The only time a host may intervene is in case of a hardware failure, or in case the box needs to be rebooted manually from the data center. They may also reinstall an operating system or do basic upgrades, but this largely depends on the host. There may also be fees associated with this. However, if minimal or no support from a host is needed, this may be a better option as it's almost always cheaper than managed hosting. Managed Hosting is on the other end of the spectrum. The host will perform system administration functions on a box, they'll usually perform system upgrades or other system changes, or install certain sets of software. This still varies from host to host, and depending on the host, they may or may not install software they don't specifically support. However, operating system upgrades, security fixes, and help is usually just a call or a click away. Some hosts will even offer 24/7 support for their managed hosting, meaning that if something suddenly goes wrong and there's a major crash, someone will be able to fix it right away. One host that has built a solid reputation in managed dedicated server hosting is WestHost. However, as mentioned above, the level of support a hosting company offers on managed servers depends on the company. It's always best to read a potential host's description of server management, and see what exactly they won't and will do, and make sure it fits into the one's general technical experience level and specific needs. What To Look For in A Managed Dedicated server? While there are many intangibles regarding what to look for in a managed dedicated server host, there are three key components that need to be examined.Reputation and Support: Make sure to read other client's experiences, and see what they think of the the host's customer service. After all, the fact that you are choosing a managed solution means that you are relying on the company's support. Make sure their terms are fair, and that no one (or very few) people have had problems with the host in the past. The reputation of a managed hosting company reveals volumes about how they will probably treat your account. Specifications: Like desktop computers, managed dedicated servers have hardware specifications. Look closely at the amount of memory, the size of the hard drive, the processor type, and the amount of bandwidth provided. Most managed dedicated server providers will allow these options to be customized to specific needs. Price: The price is always something to consider in the decision. With dedicated servers easily costing hundreds per month, finding the right price for the right value is crucial. There's no point in paying more for something that can be received from another host for a lower price if all other things are equal. However, the very fact that one is seeking a managed solution will probably indicate a higher price point - as the service component is now included in the monthly cost. Be sure to evaluate whether a managed dedicated server is right for a certain site or business. A dedicated server may not even be needed, or a higher end managed dedicated server may be required. Figure out your exact needs in a dedicated server. Next, based on experience level, choose whether a managed option or an unmanaged option is the best. Some may need the security and support a managed solution provides, while other people with system administration experience may be just fine without management. Make sure to read a host's policy regarding managed and unmanaged solutions to determine what looks the best. Finally, look all aspects of potential providers, including resources and support quality. Following this advice should provide a solid foundation to start the search for a managed dedicated server, and make your dedicated server purchase a positive one.

What is a Dedicated Server?

In the web hosting industry, a dedicated server is usually defined as the rental and exclusive use of a computer that includes a web server, related software, and connection to the Internet, located on-site, within a web hosting company's premises. In most cases, for compilation of related company web sites, that may develop a considerable amount of traffic, a dedicated server is usually needed. In many cases, the server may be configured and operated on a remote basis, independently located from the client company. A single computer on a web hosting network that is leased or rented, and dedicated to just one customer, comprises a dedicated server. A service provider will monitor the computer's hardware, network connectivity, and routing equipment, while the customer generally controls and maintains the server software. Dedicated servers are usually used for web sites that have grown beyond the basic standard web hosting account, and require a more comprehensive network. They are also used by larger companies that need separate systems for mail, web, and database servers. Web hosting companies may have their sites spread over one or several servers. Dedicated servers are generally kept inside of data centers, so that they may be monitored by service providers.
Internet business owners generally choose to outsource dedicated servers, due to the highly technical nature of the requirements, and the high availability of networks from multiple providers. Dedicated server providers utilize great amounts of bandwidth, and are able to obtain lower volume costs, which can include multi-providers in any given plan. Generally, the expenses required to develop a single network alone, is not economically feasible for most web hosting companies.Operating System Support
Availability, price and familiarity, often determines which operating systems are offered on dedicated servers. Variations of Linux, an open-source operating system, are often included at no additional charge to customers, whereas, Microsoft requires additional license fees, which can increase the monthly cost of a dedicated server operating on a Windows operating system. The Microsoft Windows Server, is offered through the Microsoft SPLA program. Commercial versions of Linux are offered to web hosting providers on a monthly fee basis. The monthly fee typically provides OS updates through a network, using specific applications. Other operating systems available from the open source community at no charge, include centOS, Fedora Core, FreeBSD, Debian, among others.
Support operating systems utilized, usually depend upon the management level afforded by individual dedicated server plan. Operating system support may include updates to the core system in order to acquire the latest security fixes, patches, and system-wide vulnerability resolutions. Updates to core operating systems include kernel upgrades, service packs, application updates, and security patches that keep server secure and safe. Operating system updates and support relieves the burden of server management from the dedicated server owner.
Bandwidth and Connectivity
Bandwidth is the data transfer rate or the amount of data that can be carried from one point, usually within a second, often represented in bits (of data) per second (bps). Visitors to the server or web site, utilize bandwidth as web site traffic moves back and forth between the server and the Internet. Access providers provide the connectivity that supplies the bandwidth, or data transfer rate, through various connection points across a network or multiple data centers, where dedicated servers are located. Some dedicated server hosting providers offer a 100% uptime guarantee on their networks. By securing multiple vendors for connectivity and using redundant hardware, providers are able to guarantee higher uptimes; usually between 99-100% uptime if they are a higher quality provider. One aspect of higher quality providers is they are mostly likely multi-homed across multiple quality uplink providers, which in turn, provides significant redundancy in the event one goes down in addition to potentially improved routes to destinations.
Dedicated server clients do not share resources, as those with shared hosting plans do. One of the primary advantages of using a dedicated server over a typical shared hosting account is the increased amount of resources and control available. In most instances, the customer may install whatever software necessary, allowing for greater flexibility and options. Custom software can be installed, which also lends to security, since there is less chance for a hacking attempt, since only one site is being hosted, rather than several hundred at a time. Since no industry standards have been set to clearly define the management role of dedicated server providers, each provider defines them differently. Some dedicated server providers define fully managed as having a web-based control panel, while others define it as having dedicated system engineers readily available to handle server and network related functions. An example of a comprehensive dedicated server plan, is one offered by web hosting solutions firm, IPOWER. Beginning at $49.00 per month, the IPOWER Virtual Private Servers are designed for self-managed reboots, multiple users, and management of IP addresses, processes, system libraries, and configuration files. Customers may also host unlimited web sites through command line administration. Just leasing a dedicated server can cost well over $200/month. Added with the administrative costs for software setup, maintenance, upgrades, and unforeseeable emergencies, the cost can quickly climb well above just the $200/month for the server. Reseller hosting provides a simple option for those who don't wish to incur the monthly cost of a dedicated server and want to start smaller.
What is Reseller Hosting?Reseller hosting is a type of hosting where an existing company sells you a portion of space and an amount of bandwidth on a server in exchange for a monthly fee. This monthly fee is usually greater than that of standard hosting, but compensates for the increased amount of space, bandwidth, and the additional software licenses that sometimes have to be purchased for use on a reseller hosting account. The alloted resources are then available to be distributed to other sites or customers for standard web hosting. Each individual website hosted off the reseller packaging usually receives their own control panel (such as cPanel or Plesk) for their use. Customers perceive absolutely no difference between a company using a reseller web hosting account and a host which leases their own server(s).
The Advantages of Reseller HostingThe advantages of reseller hosting are numerous. While the bandwidth and space may be more expensive per unit than that purchased with a dedicated server, reseller accounts allow the space and bandwidth to be purchased in smaller 'chunks'. That way smaller hosts aren't wasting resources - and subsequently money. This allows new hosts to grow into a dedicated server instead of taking the large initial plunge with the much higher monthly fee. A start up host may now yield a small profit instead of a large loss month after month.Besides this, many know the old sang ''stuff happens''. A hard drive might go bad on a server, an operating system might be corrupt, a cable might break...the list goes on and on. There are just simply things that could go wrong. With reseller hosting, the majority of the time someone else is responsible for the problem. While it may be little piece of mind if your customers experience some downtime, it is someone else's server, and it won't be your responsibility to install security updates to key software or replace hardware that has failed.
The Downside of Reseller HostingReseller hosting offers fewer resources than a dedicated server, and thus may exceed resource constraints sooner than with a dedicated server. A reseller hosting account can only hold so many clients before the space and bandwidth are greater than any reseller package the hosting company can provide, and it becomes more economically feasible to upgrade to a dedicated server. This requires moving clients from the reseller account to the dedicated server, which could result in downtime. In addition to the moving and expansion issues, most reseller hosting accounts offer little in terms of customization. Reseller accounts are usually set in what software is installed on the box, and the versions available. An example would be a client asking for PHP 5, when the version that's installed on the server hosting the reseller account is PHP 4. While some hosts may be happy to upgrade and accommodate, other hosts will not be able to upgrade as quickly.
What to Look for in a ResellerReseller accounts should be selected in much the same manner as standard hosting accounts. The first reason to not choose a host is if they offer "unlimited" space or bandwidth. There's no such thing as either of these, and most hosts that offer this are selling beyond the resources they have.Look carefully at the services and resources the reseller hosting account offers. Some will only allow a certain number of SQL databases, email accounts, domains hosted, and even a certain number of customers that are allowed to be hosted. Pay close attention to ensure that you receive the amount of resource you will need for your reseller business. There are several good resources to check when considering potential reseller hosting companies. Two good industry resources are WHT, also known as Web Hosting Talk - a discussion forum related to the web hosting industry, and The Hosting News - an online news and information source on dedicated servers and reseller web hosting.
A Successful Reseller HostBuying a managed reseller hosting account will probably not make you instantly rich, instantly generate an income, or instantly known in the web hosting world. It takes a commitment to customer service, by delivering the best service possible. Research needs to be conducted on how to setup plans and pricing, how to ensure support requests are handled quickly, and how to get your company name out there. While a reseller account can get a company started, it takes simple, common business sense to keep it going. Good luck with your new venture.

What is a Data Center?

A data center is a facility designed to store large amounts of equipment connected to computers, electronics and communications. Usually maintained by organizations in order to handle core operations in information services, including Internet connectivity, intranets, LANS, WANS, and extranets - practically every size of company, has some manner of data center. The most basic data center will have a computer network, including backup power supplies, air conditioning, and security applications, which amounts to a very large amount of data, stored in a large number of computers. Generally, the larger a company is, the larger the data center(s) will be. While larger companies may house their own data centers, smaller firms may opt to outsource its I.T. infrastructure or corporate computer information to a data center, suited to storing confidential, critical systems and business information.

It is important for a company to have access to a data center, logically, because this is where a great deal of the core equipment that is essential to its operations will be located. Much like the brain in a human body, without it, a company would not be able to run efficiently. Computers and communication elements, in addition to many other vital components, are what keep a business operating.

Internet Servers and Network Infrastructure

Also located inside of the data center, are various types of Internet servers. Data centers are often built and secured physically as well as logistically, to protect the equipment and data that they store. Security is an extremely important segment of a data center's existence. Often designed as some of the most safe environments in a city, the main purpose of the data center is to maintain and run applications so that the businesses they serve, may access and manage data files effectively.

Network infrastructure communications in data centers are most often based on networks running the IP protocol suite. Data centers contain a set of routers and switches that transport traffic between the servers and to the outside world. Some of the servers at the data center are used for running the basic Internet and intranet services needed by internal users in the organization, such as email, proxy and DNS servers ( Domain Name System (or Service) - that translates domain names into IP addresses). Network security elements are also usually deployed, such as firewalls, VPN (virtual private network - a private data network that makes use of the public telecommunication infrastructure). Also commonplace, are network monitoring and application systems.

Security

While there are many types of information that may be stored in data centers, one example for a financial institution, would be essential, critical, security-dependent client accounts, including confidential numbers, and names, as well as business projects. A bank's data center will usually have a mainframe or other kind of network, where its information and other data are stored. Another example is a university, which would include employee and student information, as well as data about the university's physical holdings, such as buildings. Other information stored for a university, might be data on construction projects, as well as intellectual history. In addition, government institutions and companies that have multiple headquarters, as well as television, mobile phone, and other similar services, rely upon data centers heavily, to store and access a company or person's critical data. One of the most important functions of the data center, is security and maintenance. This is because ultimately, the data center is a computer system's most vulnerable component. If the data center is large or contains large amounts of sensitive information, video camera surveillance and permanent security guards will probably be present. Physical security requires that personal access is usually restricted to a select few individuals.

In addition to general types of security, since the information stored within the data center, is very critical to the operation of a company, it should be protected from other types of loss, as well as theft. The security measures employed by data centers need to be strong enough to handle climate control, and contain backup systems which rely on battery power, so that they may continue to function in the case of an interruption of electrical power.

Web Hosting

With regard to web hosting, data centers are employed to store servers (housing shared accounts, dedicated servers, or colocated servers) and other types of applications. The physical layout of a data center may occupy from one room of a building, one or more floors, up to an entire building. The equipment is often in the form of 1U type servers, situated in 19 inch rack cabinets, usually placed in single rows, with corridors between them, for easy access. Mainframe computers, storage devices and other kinds of equipment (such as cooling units, fire suppression, uninterruptible power supplies), often as large as the racks, are sometimes placed alongside of them.

Featured Automation Company

Colocation and Colocated Servers By The Hosting News Staff Venturing into the world of colocation can be a daunting task. There are many factors that must be considered before you take the first step. Is colocation for you? Lets find out. What exactly is Colocation? When you are colocating you are purchasing your own server hardware, housing it in a data center complete with security, regulated power, and a dedicated Internet connection. The company that owns the data center will ensure that your servers remain secured against tampering while providing a clean and temperature regulated environment for your servers. All hardware is owned by you. Should a server fail, it will be up to you to ship the replacement hardware to the data center. The only exception to this rule is if you work out a management plan with the data center you are colocating with. How do you begin Colocating? In order to begin colocating servers you must start with the basics. Purchase the servers that you will be colocating to the data center. It is highly recommend for you to purchase a supply of replacement hardware for your servers. This way, should a piece of hardware fail, you will be able to immediately ship out the replacement hardware to the data center. The other option is to go to the data center and replace the hardware yourself should you live within the vicinity of the building. The next step is choosing a data center. Things to look for are reliability, support, network stability, location, and history. You want to ensure that your servers are going to be on a stable network with a robust backup solution in case of a power outage. It is also important that the support be top notch. They're housing servers that you have shelled out a large sum of money for, thus you want to ensure that when you need something from the data center they are able to provide you with service quickly and efficiently. The location of the data center is also important, especially if you have a target market. If you are trying to appeal to people on the east coast of the United States, then you would want a data center located somewhere on the east coast. Lastly, the history of the data center. Talk to people that house servers there, or have housed servers there in the past. Get an idea of what their experiences were like. If they left, be sure to ask why they left. Browsing web sites and forums online is also another great resource to find out more about a data center, what they offer and what they are like. Costs and benefits of ColocationSo, you're ready to take the plunge. While the upfront costs of colocation are larger than rental, the long term benefits are greater. You own all of your own hardware, you can build your servers using any combination of hardware you desire, and you have physical access to your servers anytime day or night. If you start off with ten servers and rent a quarter rack at a data center, this will typically run you around $350 per month. Next, you can decide exactly how much bandwidth you'd like for your servers. 10Mbit/sec of bandwidth spread across the ten servers will cost approximately $750 per month. The great thing about this is you can decide exactly how much bandwidth you're going to need for your servers. The largest aspect of the initial cost is the servers you're building or buying. A typical mid-range to high end server may cost you between $2,000 and $5,000 each. However, over time they will pay for themselves. You have complete control over the type of hardware that is used to build your servers. This gives you a lot more flexibility and redundancy once they are up and running. However, colocation is best used when your company needs servers in bulk. You save money on hardware and bandwidth costs, and have less monthly fees over time. Colocation or a Dedicated Server? Dedicated server hosting is fantastic if you only need a single mail server for your company, or a small number of servers for any number of applications. However, once you start buying in bulk the costs of dedicated servers far surpass colocated servers. The majority of dedicated server providers use lower quality hardware, charge monthly fees for hardware upgrades and don't provide on-site access to the servers. A ram upgrade outside of their stock servers may cost you anywhere from $50 to $100 per month, per server. This adds up quickly and will far surpass your initial start up costs for colocating within one to two years. When you colocate you are buying exactly how much bandwidth you need. Also, the network is normally more stable, has lower latency and is under-provisioned by the provider. They will always make sure that the total sum of bandwidth available is greater than what is being sold to their clients. When you rent servers from a dedicated server provider they will give you much larger chunks of bandwidth in the hope that no more than ¼ of their users will utilize the full capacity of their bandwidth. This, in time, leads to network degradation which in turn will affect your users and your business. The Final WordColocating is most affective if you are in need of custom server configurations, need servers in bulk and desire premium bandwidth. However, for smaller operations a dedicated server is a viable solution and should not be written off. Whichever route you decide to venture down, it would be wise to estimate the long-term costs for each, as well as determine the needs of your company before you write the first check.

What is Exchange Hosting?

Exchange Hosting is a server system, whereby software enables the sending and receiving of email, other types of interactive communications and the sharing of business critical information online or through enabled wireless devices. The Exchange system is designed to interoperate with applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express and other e-mail applications, typically utilized by businesses. The purpose of the Exchange hosting system is to provide easy access to business critical information, while maximizing efficiency and simplifying the business communications of small, medium and large companies or organizations.

The Microsoft Exchange service (also referred to as Microsoft Hosted Exchange) is comprised of a mobile email and collaboration suite that includes email messaging, shared folders and calendars, contact lists and to-do lists. In contrast to typical POP3 email accounts - which are designed to delete email messages from a server upon retrieval - Hosted Exhange server systems store email messages on a dedicated server (often through a third party remote server). Employees may retrieve private or shared files anywhere and at any time, since a web browser, PDA or email client is installed on the computer.

As defined by Wikipedia, Microsoft Exchange Server ''is a messaging and collaborative software product developed by Microsoft. It is part of the Windows Server System line of products and is widely used by enterprises using Microsoft infrastructure solutions. Exchange's major features consist of electronic mail, shared calendars and tasks, and support for the mobile and web-based access to information, as well as supporting data storage.''

With an Exchange hosting plan, emails and other information stored in Exchange servers may be accessed online through specific client devices such as personal computers or mobile devices. Exchange server systems offer integrated collaborative features such as scheduling, contact and task management capabilities. The Exchange server programs run on MS Windows Servers and MS Windows Server operating systems, and supports MAPI (Outlook 2003), POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols.

Microsoft Outlook Web Access systems also accommodate browser-based access systems. Exchange server systems also support mobile devices such as Blackberry, Treo, Motorola QPocket, PCs and Smartphones. The Exchange programs allow for synchronization of inboxes, calendars, contacts and task lists, as well as mobile device browsers, which allow HTML, compressed HTML (CHTML) and WAP based devices to access the Exchange server.

According to research released by Radicati Group, ''40% of all corporate e-mail boxes are currently delivered as an outsourced service, and this percentage is expected to grow to over 55% by 2006.'' Clearly, the financial investment and overhead of owning and maintaining servers and software applications in-house is substantial. Small and medium sized businesses may experience the advantages previously only available to larger firms, such as cost-effective ownership and predictability, secure deployment, and the ability to scale up or down as needed, without risk. The availability of access to information and business-class messaging, is an immeasurable service that fosters high productivity for the employees of companies that utilize Exchange hosting. Shared calendars allow employees to view colleagues' availability to schedule or rearrange meetings, book conference rooms and plan projects; shared task lists allow for new lists to be created and assigned, then shared with team members; and shared contacts guarantee the accuracy of client information, as well as securing the information so that it is not lost or misplaced.

Before Exchange hosting plans became available, mobile functionality was not accessible for businesses that neither had the time or resources to securely house and manage a server. However, businesses may outsource Microsoft Exchange hosting in order to lower costs, through a variety of secure and reliable hosted Exchange plans. Exchange servers are managed in data centers, while software is managed, including downloads and upgrades, along with customer support. Essentially, when outsourcing Exchange hosting, a company may have all of the functionality of an enterprise-level collaborative communication management solution, in a secure, efficient and cost-effective manner.

What is a Blog?

There is a vast movement underway on the Internet these days, and it is growing in popularity and sheer volume everyday - blogs and blogging. If you are interested in learning more about blogging and how blogs work then the following information will help.

Blog is a portmanteau word - which is a shortened form of two separate words mashed together. In this case it is the melding of "web log" into a simpler form - "blog". The term blog refers to a less formal means of communication on the Internet that often takes the form of multiple smaller entries combined together to form a wholistic and coherent website. Most blogs are displayed in reverse chronoligical order - that is the newest or latest entries are displayed first and the older entries are displayed after. Another often utilized aspect of blogs is that they solicit comments form the readers and offer the opportunity to link together blog entries of related information.

Some blogs are personal - as in a diary of activities or insights of an individual. These can range from the mundane to the profound - as there are as many types of blogs as there are writers to pen them. Other blogs are focussed on business persuits, or keeping readers abreast of the latest developments in a particular industry or vocation. It has become popular for traditional websites to incorporate blogs as a component of their information distribution to add fresh content when events dictate.

The following are some examples of blogs that cover both personal and business topics to give real world examples of currently updated sites:

Danny Sullivan, the search engine guru and visionary of the search engine landscape, has a blog that covers both personal and professional topics at Daggle.com.

There is a very insightful blog which has a business focus on great customer service, written by the CEO of Hostmysite.com, called Customer Service Defined.

An entertaining and informative blog entitled, Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Google, and SEO also combines personal observations with an excellent overview of Google's policies and practices - particularly regarding search rankings.

It is easy to discover new blogs such as those listed above by using a couple of blogging resources. Google has an excellent blog search function located at: http://blogsearch.google.com/. Simply type in the category of interest into the search box and thousands of blogs relating to that topic are listed. Another great feature of the Google Blog Search (beta, of course!) is the ability to view content by how ''fresh'' it is. That is - you can view material created within the past hour, the last 12 hours, the last day, or the past week. This function is labeled ''Published'' and is found on the left navigation bar.

Another popular engine used to navigate blog content is Technorati. It has a great search feature, but also uses a ''cloud'' view to represent popular categories. This feature is labeled, ''Top Tags'', as the Technorati operational methodology is to permit users to label their content with specific ''tags'' to categorize content. There are also some navigation tabs in the center of the Technorati home page which segregate content by popularity and category. The current ''popular'' categories are: Videos, Music, Movies, Games, DVDs, News, and a category entitled Buzz. They also have a great quote on the Technorati home page by Matt, ''71 million blogs...some of them have to be good''.

Tim O'Reilly has also recently published a Call for a Blogger's Code of Conduct which has some helpful information and insights. One should also consider affordable web hosting options with regard to hosting a blog.

In closing, here are a few of the more commonly used terms relating to blogs and blogging:

Blog - or web log, as mentioned above is a less formal means of communication on the Internet that often takes the form of multiple smaller entries combined together to form a holistic and coherent website.

Blogger - the individual who creates or writes the blog. Also an online software service owned by Google which enables easy blogging. See it at blogger.com.

Blogging - the act of systematically writing a series of shorter pieces over a period of time to create a blog.

Read our article regarding Blogging Software and Servives Also The Blog Host: Five Things to ConsiderAlso Tips for Successful BloggingCopyright © 2007 by The Hosting News. Most Web hosting companies are expanding their service offerings to fight these trends, and many of them are looking to offer hosted Microsoft Exchange services.
Research confirms that the vast majority of small businesses do not have sophisticated email, with mobile access and sharing of calendars, contacts and files. This leaves enormous growth potential for an offering that meets those needs.
The challenge for Web hosts, however, is the same as that of your small and medium-sized business customers: in order to offer an effective Exchange service, you have to invest large amounts of capital in the hardware and software, then manage the systems, maintain the equipment and the network and also support end-users.
The total cost over the first year, can easily exceed $100,000, which is both a large risk and also a difficult investment to recoup.
There is now an alternative, however: a number of hosted Exchange providers now offer private or white label partner programs, which allow you to sell your customers the latest hosted Exchange services, under your own brand, but without having to invest heavily in infrastructure, software and specialist personnel.
These private label programs offer the same infrastructure that the providers’ own customers use, with clustered servers, SAN storage, guaranteed uptime and all of the latest features of Exchange, badged as your own service.
The suppliers also provide marketing materials, sales coaching and level two support, which is handled by their own in-house support teams with specialist knowledge.

Eleven2 Offers Anti-Spam for iPhone

October 4, 2007 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Eleven2 Hosting (eleven2.com) announced on Wednesday that it is offering new anti-spam features to prevent spam from reaching iPhone inboxes.
Eleven2 says the custom-built spam protection combines anti-spam hardware appliances and in-house designed software to filter 99.9 percent of spam for iPhone email users, improving their user experience and lightening the load on Eleven2 servers.

Eleven2 has set up an anti-spam scan engine, which uses a layered approach to increase "kill" rates while at the same time keeping false positives to a minimum, says the company. Spam emails are identified through spam signature files and updated rules, which are designed around actual identified spam, doing away with guessing and leading to extremely low false positives. Other enhancements include heavily tweaked IMAP configurations, redundant inbound mail servers and automated outbound IP address switching to prevent blocked sending of emails.

"More and more people rely on accessing email primarily from mobile devices," says Rodney Giles, CEO and co-founder of Eleven2. "We've seen how spam can cripple employee productivity through deluged inboxes and how spam can bring company networks to their knees. We look to proactively tackle this problem so that iPhone users can experience email the way it was meant to be, with only actual messages in their inboxes."

Domain Name and Web Hosting Provider MyDomain Launches Cable TV Ads in Support of Start Your Dream Business Website for $1.00 Promotion

October 2, 2007 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – Domain name and web hosting provider MyDomain (http://www.mydomain.com/) has launched a national cable TV advertising campaign in support of its “Start Your Dream Business Website for $1.00” promotion. The multimillion-dollar campaign will be seen across the USA.

MyDomain’s promotion offers a domain on choice and “all the tools needed to quickly publish and launch a website for $1”. The company’s campaign began yesterday and commercials will run on Bravo, CNBC, the Discovery Channel, MSNBC, Discovery Times, The Movie Channel, SCI-FI, Soap Network, SPIKE TV, and USA. Two minute, one minute and 30-second versions of a commercial explaining how MyDomain helps customers “host, build, and successfully maintain a profitable website of any kind” will be aired.

"Since this industry hasn't seen an offer like this before and because there's no more affordable way to test out your online business idea, MyDomain wants the country to know about it!”, explained MyDomain’s Senior Marketing Manager, Mr. Chris Campbell. “What better way to get the word out on such an innovative offer than cable television."

Established in 1998, MyDomain.com provides “premium-managed website services” alongside domain name registration. Purchased by Dotster Inc in 2002, MyDomain.com offers “tiered domain registration pricing” alongside custom website design, Internet marketing and shared and VPS hosting.

Microsoft Releases FastCGI's Go Live Beta 3

Microsoft, today announced the Go Live beta 3 release of FastCGI for Internet Information Server. The company claims that the Go Live license provides hosting providers with a new component for Microsoft's web server platform that enables popular application frameworks like PHP to be hosted in a high-performance and reliable manner.

As a free download from the IIS community site (www.iis.net), FastCGI will allow IT Professionals to host PHP applications on Windows Server 2003 and IIS 6 with increased scalability and security. In addition, betas of Windows Server 2008 currently include the FastCGI extension as a completely integrated feature of IIS 7. The new modular architecture introduced in IIS 7 will provide additional functionality to PHP applications by enabling them to take advantage of new managed code services.

FastCGI is now available for IIS6 as a Go Live release, meaning customers have a free license to deploy this production-quality release on Windows Server 2003 today. It will ship in Windows Server 2008 as a built-in IIS component for the first time, sparing customers the hassle of downloading, installing and patching 3rd party products. It also allows IIS to reuse CGI processes for multiple requests to PHP applications, helping dramatically improve the performance of PHP on Windows while maintaining reliability.

ResellerClub Announces .IN Domains Sale

ResellerClub, one of the largest Web Service Providers in the industry today announced the biggest sale for .IN domains ever. Despite the fact that 46% of consumers stated they will shop more than four weeks before the holiday, Jupiter Research expects the convenience of online purchasing, the primary reason consumers shop online, to push purchasers to the very edge of the buying season. In 2003, books and apparel top consumers' gift lists, and the toy category has overtaken the purchase of music. Based on an October 2003 consumer survey fielded by Jupiter Research, Jupiter Research's new report "Holiday 2003: Online Pushes Limits of Last Minute Shopping" found that close to 40% of online users plan to do some or all of their holiday shopping online, an increase of 18% over last year. Overall, consumers are more confident in spending in the online channel; fewer consumers cited fear of credit card security this versus last year (36% vs. 47%, respectively). Half of consumers say they can find the products they are looking for online more easily than in stores and they believe they can obtain hard-to-locate products online far easier than in stores. Jupiter Research attributes these shifts in consumer attitude, and the 21% surge in holiday spending this year, to the influx of new buyers using the online channel.

Jupiter Research's Holiday 2003 Executive Survey shows that retailers have taken measures to improve their fulfillment and customer service capabilities this year, and to ensure they are ready for the last minute rush. Forty one percent of online retailers surveyed will offer extended cut-off dates in order to encourage last minute purchases. Just over half of the retailers surveyed by Jupiter Research will also rely on new seasonal staff to accommodate the increased demand. According to Patti Freeman Evans, Retail Analyst at Jupiter Research, "Given the short selling season and the highest projected online holiday sales volume ever, online retailers stand to gain or lose a great deal by anticipating consumers' last minute shopping needs." Because consumers' primary concerns about buying gifts online center on shipping and delivery, retailers who fulfill orders on time, even very late in the buying season, stand to garner high loyalty points with holiday shoppers.

The complete findings of this report are immediately available to Jupiter Research clients online. There are many ways you can profit from the traffic to your website. Here are ten golden tips to generate revenue from the existing visits to your web site.

1. Join relevant affiliate programs
Have you ever been on a website and seen a small add that says 'Buy this book on Amazon.com", there is a good chance that ad was placed by an Amazon affiliate. An affiliate is paid a "finders fee" for customers they send to a website. You can generate revenue by referring people to sites with products or services that interest your website visitors. For more information visit http://www.cj.com or http://www.linkshare.com.
2. Sell Advertising on your site
You can offer advertising space to advertisers with complimentary products. Charge them by the click or perhaps strike a deal where they pay you for every customer they acquire. If you have lots of traffic to your site, visit http://www.advertising.com they will help sell the advertising and track traffic and clicks.
3. Create a "For Sale" or "Coming Soon" Parking Page
If you own domains that don't yet have websites designed, you can create a page to offer the domain name for sale, or to let customers know it is in development and "coming soon". When customers visit these pages, they can be directed to links to similar sites. www.moniker.com offers free parking pages.
4. Increase sales 5-15% with an exit pop-up
Most of us dislike pop-up ads, but if someone is leaving your site without purchasing anything, isn't it worth one more chance to catch their attention? Exit pop-up ads can generate 5-15% of daily sales for most websites.
5. Sell sponsored content areas
In many industries, companies would be willing to provide content (articles, online tools and functionality) in exchange for recognition and a link to their website. For example on MSN, ESPN provides sports information and MSNBC provides financial news.
6. Sell 'Opt-in' traffic in the sales funnel
Many companies will pay for names and email addresses of people who have opted to receive information and special offers. For example, magazine subscription companies will pay a finders fee for every person that agrees to receive a free trial of a publication.
7. Sell relevant or complimentary products.
If you sell toys, offer to ship the required batteries with the toy for a special price. If you sell books, offer a book mark or book light with the purchase.
8. Sell your exit traffic
When a customer clicks on the little "x" at the top right hand corner of your site, don't despair, send her to a complimentary website. Utilize an affiliate code or arrange for a CPA (Cost Per Acquisition) or CPL (Cost Per Lead) reward for customers that the destination site is able to convert.
9. Work with Leads Plus to generate targeted traffic
This innovative company offers customers several special promotions after a customer service call or visit, www.leadsplus.com.
10. Partner with www.webloyalty.com
Give your customers premium savings and services, making your site a more attractive for the consumer. Programs and services webloyalty.com offers include travel discounts, shopping savings, entertainment discounts and home computer protection.

The Full Monte: Why an Industry Pioneer's One Stop Shop Kept Expanding Long After the Bubble Burst

Monte Cahn is the real Six Million Dollar Man. Actually he has done more business than that ? we just got tired of counting. Cahn was the lead partner in brokering the industry?s first one million dollar sale when his firm, Hitdomains.com (now DomainSystems.com) helped broker the sale of WallStreet.com for $1.03 million in 1999. The record didn?t stand for long though. Cahn topped himself just months later with the $2.2 million dollar sale of Autos.com to CarsDirect.com. It was the biggest cash transaction in domain name history at the time and many say those two deals triggered the buying frenzy that followed (and continued until a price meltdown finally hit the business).
Yes, the bubble did burst, but Cahn barely got wet. DomainSystems also conducted or assisted in the sales of such gems as eCommerce.com, eToys.com, Mortgage.com, Celebrities.com, Hotel.com, Guns.com, OfficeSupply.com and many others. We ran out of zeros on our calculator before we could total it all up. In the midst of disaster, with competitors on all sides dying, DomainSystems thrived. We'll explain how Cahn pulled off that remarkable feat but first let?s back up a moment and ask the obvious question, "Who IS this guy?" Your first thought is that he must be some kind of real-life Joe Hardy (the guy in Damn Yankees who sold his soul to the devil so his hapless Washington Senators could win a World Series).

In this case, Lucifer had nothing to do with it (he was presumably busy working on VeriSign?s business plan at the time). The story still seems supernatural though, especially when you consider that ever since he was 13 years old, Cahn knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life and by the time he was 31 he had done it. It was only after reaching the pinnacle of one profession that domain names lured him into another.

Cahn grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio where his parents ran a successful furniture business. Every week his mailbox filled up with letters from his grandmother who lived in San Diego where a biotech boom was underway. "She kept sending me articles about this exciting new industry," Cahn recalled, "I soon decided what I wanted to be when I grew up! Starting in junior high school I geared all of my elective courses toward a career in the medical field."

When he graduated from high school, Cahn crossed the Ohio River to attend the University of Kentucky, a short drive down I-75 in Lexington. During his junior year at UK Cahn became an intern for a medical equipment company and wound up shocking them by becoming their top salesman! "They wound up putting a branch in Lexington just because I was there," Cahn said. Using his earnings to pay his own way through school, Cahn graduated in 1987 with degrees in Marketing and Biology and he would make great use of both disciplines.

Shortly before graduation Cahn had started his own business marketing specialized cardiology equipment. Once he got his diploma he decided to moved to South Florida because he realized two things. One ? the high ratio of physicians and hospitals per capita would give him a bigger market for his goods and Two ? the weather and beaches in Florida are much nicer than the ones in Kentucky.

In 1989 Cahn caught the eye of drug giant Eli Lilly who recruited him to take over sales for a struggling subsidiary they had in Miami. That branch of IVAC Corp. was ranked near the bottom of Lilly's national territories at #111. Within two years, Cahn had moved them all the way up to #4. Now it was time for a really bold move.

"A group of other senior managers decided to join me and go out on our own," Cahn said. They founded Pyxis Corporation and based it in San Diego where his medical dreams had started with those letters from grandma. "Pyxis invented automated medication and supply distribution systems that are now used in almost every hospital in America and around the world," Cahn said. "We took the company public then sold it to Cardinal Health, one of the world's largest drug distributors."

As any entrepreneur will tell you, the real thrill comes from the chase rather than the reward at the end. Cahn wanted a new challenge so he started helping out another startup that had invented an online medical records system. The company's ideas were ahead of their time but they showed Cahn the unlimited potential of the Internet.

"In 1996, the son of one of my customers told me he had been buying domain names because they were the electronic equivalent of real estate," Cahn recalled. "I liked what I heard and formed a sideline business with him." Together they started the first domain brokerage on the net at NameShop.com, well before Great Domains and Afternic arrived on the scene.

Cahn also started building his own portfolio and soon left that partnership to pursue bigger game. He wanted to handle the most valuable domains on the market and established Hitdomains.com to pursue his goal. The company's multi-million dollar blockbuster deals in 1999 lit a fuse under the entire industry. In 2000, Hitdomains merged with another industry leader, SolutionHome.com, giving Cahn a pair of talented new partners and a new corporate name, DomainSystems.com. The revamped company set up shop in Pompano Beach, Florida, right in the middle of Cahn's old medical stomping grounds that had now become a hotbed of internet business activity. Sportline.com, Valueweb.com, Citrix Systems, Verio and IBM are all within 5 miles of the DomainSystems offices.

Cahn, who is now 38, serves as CEO for both DomainSystems and Moniker.com (his ICANN approved registrar). 35-year-old co-founder Eric Harrington is President of the two companies. Harrington is a Michigan State graduate with an MBA from Harvard. 40-year-old attorney Joel S. Magolnick completes the triumverate as co-founder, General Counsel and Vice President. Joel is also the managing partner of his own law practice in Miami where he got his Juris Doctor degree at the University of Miami.

This is where things really get interesting. DomainSystems.com was formed just as the bottom was starting to fall out of the domain business. The earthquake that rocked the industry leveled most other start up companies, but as Cahn surveyed the rubble he saw only opportunities.

Some great domain names were suddenly becoming available from companies that were now in bankruptcy. Because of DomainSystems track record in brokering high dollar deals, the courts usually turned to them to get the most money possible from the remaining domain assets. "When many others were stuck, we were hired and that helped fund our business while times overall were tough," Cahn said.

That is how Cahn wound up handling the sales of eCommerce.com, eToys.com, Mortgage.com and some of the other blue chip names mentioned at the top of this article. That process continues still today with DomainSystems waiting for court clearance to begin marketing the Excite@Home portfolio.

With their history of success and expansion into a complete line of domain services (corporate domain management, expired/drop domain services, traffic monetization services, registrations, brokering, traffic monitoring, appraisals and hosting to name a few) DomainSystems also began attracting business from America's largest corporations. Disney, Miramax Films, Toyota, Proctor & Gamble, Bank of America, the National Hockey League and dozens more came to him to manage and protect their invaluable domain assets. Cahn said "We maintain the most secure registrar and DNS management system to ensure uptime for our clients. To date we have never lost a domain and our registrar has never been down. No other registrar I know can make that claim."

DomainSysyems/Moniker also has a client list that reads like a Who's Who of high profile domain industry figures. The roster includes BuyDomains.com, Thunayan K. Al-Ghanim (Elequa of Future MediaArchitects), DomainDeluxe and NameAdministrator among others. Cahn draws successful clients like a magnet because he understand why they are successful. "They understand the market and recognize the domains that will result in the highest paying traffic," Cahn said. "They also know when and at what price to sell a domain when the right opportunity comes along. We have sold many names for our customers which funds their various business opportunities and additional acquisitions."

DomainSystems acquired Moniker.com just last year and the registrar has played a key role in continuing to attract major clients. Originally known as MrDomReg.com, Moniker started in 1999 when it became (and remains) the only registrar to pass its ICANN accreditation and registry connection requirements on its first try. When Cahn bought the company it had only 1700 domains on the books. Within a year, that number soared to over 150,000 and growth continues unabated.

Today Moniker is one of the five fastest growing registrars on ICANN's approved list of 160. They rank 19th in registrations and Cahn says they will reach the Top 10 by this time next year. "We continue to add 12 to 20 thousand registrations per month while most other registrars are losing market share," Cahn said. "We expect to double our business in the next 6-9 months".

For those more interested in the domain aftermarket, Cahn said the average retail price realized by sellers who use DomainSystems is the highest in the industry. "Being a one stop shop featuring experience, legal and escrow has allowed us to attract the most valuable domains to sell and that has kept our average sales higher than the others." Cahn added "We also have contacts with the right potential buyers which gives us an edge when marketing high profile domains."

Whatever they are doing it is working. They now have several hundred thousand domains and active websites listed for sale. Most DomainSystems clients sell their domains through the company's combination For Sale/Pay Per Click pages as this allows them to collect revenue from traffic while names are on the market. Cahn has some good news for those clients and everyone else in the industry. "We are seeing a huge upswing in valuations and that is a good sign for the future," he said. Six figure sales are even starting to pop up again. "We are currently working on some big sales, including Shanghai.com which we feel will bring in access of $350,000."

Whatever service a client might need, Cahn intends to provide it. Though resellers often debate the value of domain appraisals, many companies and individuals require them for tax purposes. DomainSystems covered that base long ago. "We invented the first domain appraisal system and have done over 380,000 appraisals to date," Cahn said. "The criteria from our system are now used in more than 95% of all domain appraisals on the web. Our appraisals are also accepted by the IRS to value charitable domain donations."

In January of this year, DomainSystems added the latest piece to their corporate portfolio by launching their own web hosting business, CoolHandle Hosting at CoolHandle.com. While many of the company's enterprises are aimed at corporate level clients, CoolHandle was designed for small business and individual webmasters. DomainSystems/Moniker manages to keep all of their balls in the air with a 10-person staff at their main office and an additional half dozen handling web hosting support at CoolHandle.

While tending to his own business, Cahn also keeps an eye on important developments in the industry at large. Though it is currently on hold, VeriSign's proposed WLS system has certainly not escaped his attention. "We are totally against WLS and are actively involved in a lawsuit against VeriSign and ICANN. Monopolization of the market can only hurt the industry as a whole, not help it," Cahn said.

Those who support WLS claim it is needed to "level the playing field" and give everyone an equal opportunity to acquire the best expiring domain names. Cahn doesn't buy that. "I believe that domains are just like real estate. Anyone has the right to buy property if they have enough financial and/or creative resources to do so," he said. "The difference is that our segment involves a level of technological sophistication that many without resources do not have. I believe that domains are a public resource until they are registered but then they become personal property."

While some are jealous of the success the major players have had in the expiring names market, Cahn believes those players are the very thing necessary to have a thriving market. "Because they know how to monetize the domains, our industry will continue to grow and remain strong. Just imagine if all of our domains were just registered and renewed and not making any money or not becoming someone's dream business," Cahn said. "Many criticize those that capture dropped names first and use them in unique and rewarding ways. But this is what keeps everyone interested in this market and I believe it will grow exponentially as more people jump on the web."

WLS is obviously a sore spot with Cahn and he views VeriSign?s recently derailed Sitefinder scheme (one they threaten to resurrect in the future) with equal disdain. "I feel that Sitefinder is totally illegal and an unfair marketing practice," Cahn said. "VeriSign's move jeopardized the technological structure and foundation of the internet. As a registry and provider of registry services to registrars, they have no right to hijack the unresolved domain traffic."

Cahn clearly recognizes the value of traffic so, when you consider how many great domain names have passed through his hands, you have to wonder how many he has in his own portfolio. Cahn said "I still have many of my original names from 1996. Most are domain related or geared toward our business and future business ideas. I was fortunate enough to grab a few 2-character and short word domains that are valuable today, but I certainly don't have the quality of names that many of our customers like ultimate Search, Elequa and BuyDomains have." Cahn added, "My partners and I have always spent most of our time and our company's time on providing services to our customers rather than harvesting inventory for ourselves."

Though 1996 was just 7 years ago it was a much different world in domain terms. "Back then domains were $70 and sometimes as high as $100 each. We registered about 1,000 of them so it was quite expensive to maintain a large inventory," Cahn said. "That forced us to learn how to sell and monetize them very quickly." Cahn added that back then no one really understood the value of traffic or search engine placement. "Today that is the most important valuation criteria rather than just the brand name itself," Cahn said.

So here he is, just 7 years after entering this business, with a company that is one of the largest privately held domain services firms on the Internet. Asked to sum up what sets DomainSystems/Moniker apart from the crowd Cahn said "We are unique. We are the only ICANN accredited registrar that also has a thriving after market business, as well as hosting and email services. No other registrar is offering all of that and best in class service in one spot today." Judging from the company?s past they will be offering even more tomorrow.

Editor's Note: If you wish to contact Monte Cahn he can be reached by email at Monte@Moniker.com or Monte@DomainSystems.com, or by phone at 954-984-8445.

Featured Success - Interview with Jupitermedia

Q - How did you hear about Moniker (CH, DS)?
A - Monte Cahn, the CEO of Moniker worked with us as an expert witness regarding domain issues in a legal case.

Q - Why did you select Moniker?
A - We did a trial with Moniker, the service was excellent and the prices were good so we expanded the relationship. Since the dot com boom and bust, and now with the resurgence of the internet, many companies are beginning reap the rewards of their hard work and staying power. Getting all you can out of your domain registration is one of the most important strategies you can take to ensure online success.

Listed below are 10 great domain management tools that all website managers can be using every day:

1.

Domain Parking

If you own domain name and haven't created a website for it, Domain Parking is a great way to gain traffic from natural 'type in' visitors and search engines, while at the same time increasing your online presence and value. There are two main types of parking pages:

* The first and most popular is a For Sale parking page. This page allows others to know that your domain is For Sale and provides a bid form for interested parties to place on offer on your domain. Moniker prepares thousands of appraisals, and sells hundreds of domains each month on behalf of their customers from the use of the For Sale parking pages.
* The second most popular parking page is a Coming Soon parking page. This page allows customers to know that your web site is in development and use of the domain is coming online soon. These pages, and For Sale pages, allow users to click on a related link to the name they typed into the browser. For example if your name was Shanghai.com, and someone typed in Shanghai.com into the browser, they would see that this domain is For Sale, or they would be able to click on a link related to Shanghai so that they most likely end up where they intended. Domain Parking is available with Moniker at no charge.
2.

Traffic Stats

Traffic Statistics provide information on unique type in visitors to the website or a domain name parking page. Every domain manager should review their free daily, weekly, and monthly traffic statistics. This information is also a valuable tool to help you determine the value of a domain when deciding on renewals, or when putting your domains up for sale and determining appropriate sale prices.
3.

URL Forwarding

URL Forwarding allows you to point your domain to another IP address or web site to bring your domain to life instantly. Moniker offers two free URL Forwarding options; URL redirect/masking and frame forwarding. These options allow you to either carry the domain name in the browser or take the name of the site you are forwarding to. Many domain owners register variations of their domain names and forward the variations to their main site to increase traffic and to build brand value.
4.

Email Forwarding

With Email Forwarding service, you can transparently forward email directed to any of your domains to your own current Email address. For example if you have a domain related email set up such as steven@moniker.com, you can forward any emails directed to your steven@yahoo.com address so that you can read all of your email in one mailbox. Another great use of Email Forwarding is to have variations of a domain email set up to all forward to one email address. For example, you can have: sales@Your Domain.com, webmaster@Your Domain.com and service@Your Domain.com all forward to your personal email. This is a great way to look like a bigger company with many employees. Email Forwarding is free with domain registration at Moniker.
5.

Enhanced Security

With domain theft on the rise, enhanced security is critical to ward off unauthorized changes of domain names. Moniker is proud to offer the very highest levels of security in the domain industry. This includes admin notification and approval in order to change contact information, DNS, and transfer requests. Moniker's system prevents the theft and unauthorized changes in your account even if someone were able to access your account using your account number and password. Because our system makes the former authorized email approve any changes to your account first, no one can make these changes unless you have approved them. In addition, in an effort to prevent wide spread domain theft, Moniker is the only registrar that has management approval for every domain transfer out request before a second approval is sent to our customers to approve through the system. If you have to transfer a domain for any reason, simply notify us from the current admin email on file, and your transfer request will gain Admin approval before sending a message to your account.
6.

Online Reporting

You can use several online reports to assist you with your domain management needs. You can view such items as pending transfers and status, applied credits, recently registered domains, expiring domains, invoices and payments and much more. In addition, Moniker has recently added two more specialized reports accessed through the "Report Center" inside the domain manager. The first report supplies you with the following information - domain name, auto renew setting, expiration date, forwarding setting, and dns. The second report provides domain name, admin email, auto renew setting, creation date, expiration date, forwarding setting, and dns. Online Reporting is Free with your domain registration at Moniker.
7.

Global Change Capabilities

With Global Change Capabilities, you can view and modify up to 5,000 names at one time within your domain manager. Moniker has developed the very best management tools to assist domain managers in making day to day management tasks as efficient as possible for both the individual and large customer.
8.

Domain transfers

Moniker.com offers free assistance to transfer and consolidate all your names registered at Moniker. If you want to transfer small numbers of domains to Moniker, you can simply use the "Switch to Moniker" tab from anywhere on the site. If you have more names than you want to deal with or if you would just like our assistance, Moniker can process your domain transfers for you. All you need to do is to make sure that you have enough credits in your account to process your transfers/renewals and send the list of your domains along with your account number to Support@Moniker.com and Moniker Customer Service will be very happy to assist you. Remember that all transfers come with an additional year of renewal from the expiration date so you do not loose any time for transferring your domains well before expiration from another registrar.
9.

Ownership transfers

Ownership changes are free with registration at Moniker; they are simply performed by using the "Push Domain" button in the domain manager. All you need is the new registrant's account number and you will have the option of pushing the domain to that account with your account information remaining in tact. Or, you can push the domain without your account information. Changing ownership of domains is simple, free and only takes seconds to perform.
10.

Live Customer Service & Support

Most registrars charge for service calls or are not available by phone. Moniker.com is proud to offer the industries only award winning, personal, toll-free customer support with seven day a week coverage. It offers low-cost, flexible web hosting that is traditionally associated with shared hosting, but with more control of the hosting environment.

ServerPoint CTO Erik Johnson said the company takes special precautions to ensure their servers are never overloaded, a common complaint from web developers whose sites are hosted on low-quality VPS.

VPS Basic starts at $19.99 per year, and includes 5 GB of disk space, 128 MB of guaranteed RAM, 300 GB of bandwidth and includes an unlimited number of domains and two IP addresses.

Linux VPS Complete, the company's mid-range service, includes plans that start at $29.99 per month, with 25GB of disk space, 384 MB of guaranteed RAM, 1,000 GB of monthly data transfer, in addition to the resources available through the Basic plan.

Linux VPS Deluxe, their premiere VPS option that starts at $49.99 per month, offers 50GBs of disk space, 512MBs of guaranteed RAM, 1,500 GBs of bandwidth and full root access, in addition to the resources available through the Complete plan.

"Other hosts run their VPS on a low-end server which offers zero redundancy. ServerPoint hosts its VPS on one of our Colossus II servers, which we developed in-house so that it would have the power and functionality that we required. Colossus II has redundancy on every kind of server element that normally fails, including power, storage, CPUs and RAM. With 99.9% guaranteed uptime, we feel confident that ServerPoint offers the most secure, most stable VPS in the industry. We guarantee our customers there will be no overloading of a ServerPoint server. We would rather invest more money in additional servers than cram more customers on a server than it can handle. Our top priority at ServerPoint is quality. Our engineers are some of the most experienced in the business, and our investment in equipment, more than a quarter million dollars in network equipment, including routers and switches, is part of our commitment to provide services that truly differentiate ServerPoint in a very competitive industry," said Johnson.

Crucial Paradigm Modifies cPanel Anti-Spam Function

Crucial Paradigm, a provider of shared, reseller, dedicated and managed web hosting solutions, today announced that it has responded to customer concerns and disabled cPanel's "sender verify" feature. The company claims that this feature, which was integrated into the latest release of the popular control panel, frequently causes legitimate emails to be rejected.

The "sender verify" function was first implemented in the cPanel 11 stable release. By default, the function is automatically enabled on all domains hosted on a servers running cPanel. The majority of Web hosts running cPanel have not disabled the feature.

"We first came across the problem in late August, after several of our clients notified us they were not receiving legitimate emails. After investigation by our engineers, we found the problem was caused by cPanel's implementation of 'sender verify'. Since then, we have worked to disable the function across our fleet, and we have not encountered the same problem. Scheduled to open in December 2007, this facility will be the Company's third data center in Montreal.

The company claims that its new 22,700-square-foot facility will be equipped with uninterruptible power supplies, emergency diesel back-up generators and power equivalent cooling, with N+1 level of redundancy. The facility will be protected by a sophisticated, multi-layer security system that includes video surveillance, secured access, and biometric identification sensors. In addition, customers of the new data center are said to benefit from iWeb's complete suite of value-added services, such as 24-hour emergency technical support, ping monitoring and managed security back-ups.

The facility was previously used as a data center. As such, the basic
infrastructure necessary to operate a co-location hosting data center is said to be already installed. During the following months, the company asserts that it will work to upgrade the facility to meet the company's stringent operational standards. The company has
entered into a lease agreement for up to 30 years, and has options to purchase the building at regular time intervals.

"A fundamental component of our strategy is to grow the co-location segment of our business," said Eric Chouinard, President and Chief Executive Officer of iWeb. "The cumulative co-location hosting capacity of our two current data centers has always been limited, as they are both primarily dedicated server hosting facilities. The addition of this strictly co-location hosting data center will enable us to diversify our revenue base, extend our footprint in the Montreal marketplace and target a broader customer base."

Comodo Offers Free PCI Scanning

Comodo, an Identity and Trust Assurance Management solutions company, claims that is doing its part to assist businesses in protecting consumer information from hackers by offering eMerchants a free quarterly PCI compliant scan. If you can't afford a dedicated server at this point but require the same performance and stability, then VPS hosting may be the best solution for you...

VPS (virtual private server) hosting consists of a server divided into multiple isolated accounts, and each VPS account has its own independent operating system with it's own web server and mail server resources, no sharing here. Just like a dedicated server, you can have access to all configuration files within your account which means a greater ability for you to install and run custom software should you choose to.

Click here for a list of great value vps hosting plans

In addition to providing more control over your hosting environment, VPS hosting accounts are more secure than shared hosting accounts. If a hacker were to find access to a shared server he could damage any or all of the websites on that server at once. But because a VPS server is divided into isolated accounts, even if a hacker were to gain entry through one account there is no way to access the others.

More experienced webmasters may wish to manage the technical aspects of their VPS accounts, but this can be a time-consuming and complicated task. It's little wonder many people prefer to have their VPS hosting accounts fully managed by the hosting provider. Usually you'll pay a few dollars per month extra for this, but this can free up your valuable time and energy to concentrate on content and website promotion.

You can expect to pay $40-$60 per month for an entry-level, fully managed vps hosting account and this will allow you to run multiple sites from one account just like a reseller account. You'll be provided with an operating system, control panel, your own allocation of RAM memory, plus large space and bandwidth resources. A minimum of 256MB guaranteed ram is suggested in order to run your control panels and database driven sites smoothly. For higher traffic sites consider 384MB or 512MB of guaranteed ram or more. The best vps hosting accounts provide bandwidth allowance of 100's of gigabytes which is usually more than enough for most purposes.

Domain Name Registration Questions & Answers!

Domain name registration service provider that provides answers to real people’s questions.
